Sri Lanka Itinerary: 10 Days - Yala Safari Classic
The classic circuit with Yala in it: fortress, temple, tea country and Ella, then leopard country, then the beach. For visitors who will not leave without Yala. The trip runs the familiar arc through Sigiriya, Kandy, the tea country and Ella, then drops to Tissamaharama for two days of game drives; Yala's leopards are famously indifferent to jeeps, which is exactly what you want for photographs. Mirissa's beach and whale boats take the last two nights. Travelling in September or early October? Check with us first: Yala's main blocks close annually for maintenance and the exact dates shift each year.

10-day itinerary questions
Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Ten days is the sensible minimum for the full arc this route covers: Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the tea country, a safari and one coast. Adding a second coast means two extra transfer days of 5 hours or more, which costs you the two days you were trying to gain. This route does one loop properly instead.
Should we do one Yala safari or two?
The afternoon session on arrival day is included in the route. The next morning is your call: our default is a relaxed morning and a comfortable two-to-two-and-a-half-hour coast transfer. If wildlife is your priority, we happily book the dawn session too; the drive after it is short enough that the day still works.
Is this itinerary good in July or August?
Partly, honestly. The south coast section is in its monsoon window then, so for July and August we swap the last days to Arugam Bay on the east coast, which is in peak season; that swap ends about 6 to 7 hours from the airport, so the summer version needs either an early-start final day or a night near Colombo before the flight. Our summer routes are built around exactly this, so tell us your month first.
What about Yala's September closure?
Yala Blocks 1 and 2 close each year for a dry-season rest, typically from around mid-September into October; the Department of Wildlife Conservation sets exact dates annually, so ask us before booking a September or October safari. Blocks 3 to 6 stay open, and Udawalawe is a strong alternative in that window. The core December-to-March season this route targets is unaffected.
We are flying from India. Does this route fit a short trip?
It fits well. Colombo is a short hop from South India and a few hours from the northern hubs, so day one still gets you to Sigiriya by evening; tell us your arrival time and we set the first drive around it. Indian passport holders still apply for the ETA before travel, though the fee itself is currently waived, and SAARC nationals get reduced rates at several sites, including the Temple of the Sacred Tooth; confirm the exact SAARC price at the counter.
Every day on this route is driven by your own driver and car; see how private driver hire works. Check the visa requirements and when to go before you fix dates.
