Sri Lanka Itinerary: 7 Days - Classic Ceylon Highlights
The week most first-time visitors are actually after: the rock fortress, the Temple of the Tooth, a tea-country morning, wild elephants at Udawalawe, and a night inside Galle Fort.A sensible seven days with no backtracking. Sigiriya gets two nights, enough for the fortress climb and Dambulla's painted caves at an easy pace. Kandy and the tea country follow, then a jeep safari at Udawalawe, where elephant sightings hold up year-round. The last full day belongs to Galle Fort: rampart walls, a working lighthouse, dinner inside the old town.

Sigiriya, at your pace
Sigiriya's 200-metre rock citadel and the Dambulla Cave Temple, five caves cut into a cliff face over 2,000 years ago and covered in Buddhist murals largely repainted in the 18th-century Kandyan style, take up the day. An optional afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park can find elephant herds numbering in the hundreds during The Gathering, July to October; outside that window Kaudulla is the more reliable park and herds run smaller.
Kandy
Kandy, the hill capital that has guarded Buddhism's holiest relic since the 16th century, is about 2.5 hours away via Matale. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake fill the afternoon, ending with the evening puja, a drumming and offering ceremony held three times daily.

Every 7-day route, compared
This is our main Sri Lanka itinerary for 7 days; the other shapes we run at this length are below, each drivable as written and customizable to your dates.
- South Coast and WhalesA week on the southwest coast in its dry season: Bentota's river and beach, Unawatuna's swimming bay beside Galle Fort, and whale boats out of Mirissa.
- Classic Ceylon Summer HighlightsThe May-to-September version of the classic week: the cultural triangle first, then the east coast at Trincomalee while its sea is at its calmest.
- Ramayana Heritage TrailThe Ramayana sites in a single week: Munneswaram temple, the shrines above Kandy, and Seetha Amman in the hills where Sita is held to have been kept.
- Relaxed Sigiriya, Kandy and MirissaThe classic sights at a gentler pace, with two unhurried beach nights at Mirissa in whale season to finish.
- Sigiriya, Tea Country and Coast HoneymoonA honeymoon week without the resort cliches: the rock fortress at sunrise, tea-country air, a private jeep among elephants, dinners by the water at Mirissa.
- Wildlife Triangle to UdawalaweTwo safaris a week apart in habitat: elephant herds at Minneriya or Kaudulla, then Udawalawe's open grassland, with Ella's ridge walks between.
- Family WeekSeven days a 6-year-old can enjoy: Sigiriya climbed cool and early, an elephant safari, Kandy's drumming ceremony, and Bentota's shallow water to finish.

7-day itinerary questions
Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Seven days is enough for one route done well, and this one leans into that: two full nights at Sigiriya, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth timed to its evening puja, tea country, a safari at Udawalawe and a Galle Fort finale, with no road driven twice. What does not fit into seven days is all of that plus a multi-day beach stay on top; that combination is what the 10-day routes are for.
Can I do this itinerary by train instead of a car?
Not fully, as of September 2026. The famous Kandy to Ella line is only partially open after 2025 cyclone damage: the scenic Nanu Oya to Ella stretch runs, but there is no through train from Kandy, and this route's shape does not pass Ella at all. If the hill train matters to you, ask us for the Ella-based 7-day variant and we build the ride in with the car carrying your luggage. Sri Lanka Railways publishes line updates at railway.gov.lk.
How much does a week in Sri Lanka cost?
Budget roughly US$50-80 per person per day mid-range for rooms, meals and local transport, plus entry fees (the table above) and your car and driver. One honest caveat: between 20 December and February, room rates on popular routes run 30-40% higher, and the Christmas-to-early-January window can double them. Early December is noticeably calmer and cheaper.
Can this be compressed into 5 days?
Honestly: only with compromises. Five days forces the hill-country visit and the airport return into the same day, which only works with a late-afternoon or evening flight and leaves no buffer. If you have 5 days, our 5-day Classic Express drops the hill country for the Cultural Triangle and Kandy instead. Tell us your dates and we will be straight about what fits.
Does this route work with kids?
Yes, with one honest adjustment. Sigiriya's climb is about 1,200 uneven steps on an exposed staircase; children over six or seven usually manage it before the heat, and Pidurangala next door is the shorter scramble if not. The Udawalawe safari and Galle Fort days are easy with children as they stand, and our dedicated 7-day Family Week swaps the pacing further toward the pool.
Every day on this route is driven by your own driver and car; see how private driver hire works. Check the visa requirements and when to go before you fix dates.
