  1. Sigiriya

The flight lands in Colombo, and the road runs north to Sigiriya, about 4 hours through Kurunegala and Dambulla, with a lunch stop along the way.

  2. Sigiriya, at your pace

Sigiriya's 200-metre rock citadel is best climbed before the midday heat, followed by the Dambulla Cave Temple, five caves of Buddhist murals and statues carved into the cliff 2,000 years ago. An optional afternoon safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park can find elephant herds over 100 strong during the July-to-October dry-season Gathering, with smaller family groups the rest of the year, or swap it for a day trip to the 12th-century ruins of Polonnaruwa.

  3. Kandy

Kandy, the hill capital that has guarded Buddhism's holiest relic since the 16th century, is about 2.5 hours away via Matale. The afternoon covers the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and Kandy Lake, then the evening puja, a drumming and offering ceremony held three times a day.
