Sri Lanka Itinerary: 5 Days - South Coast Express
Two beach bases and nothing forced: Bentota's calm river-mouth sands, then Mirissa, where blue whales feed offshore between November and April.The short beach holiday, done in the right season. Bentota comes first: a wide, calm beach beside a mangrove river you can explore by boat, with a turtle hatchery down the road at Kosgoda. Mirissa follows for the second half, a smaller bay known for its dawn whale-watching boats. The transfer down to Bentota and the ride home both run on the expressway; the switch to Mirissa follows the coast road past Hikkaduwa's reef and Galle's 17th-century fort. No day loses more than three and a half hours to driving.

The journey, day by day
Bentota
Land and take the expressway straight down to Bentota, about 2.5 hours, passing Colombo on the way. The rest of the day is beach.

Bentota, at your pace
A morning boat ride through the Bentota river's mangrove channels, where monitor lizards sun themselves on the banks; the Kosgoda turtle hatchery is twenty minutes down the coast for the afternoon.
Mirissa
About 2.5 hours along the coast road to Mirissa, passing the reef beach at Hikkaduwa and Galle's 17th-century fort, worth a stop for lunch inside the walls with rampart views.

Parrot Rock (Mirissa)
A large flat-topped rock at the eastern end of Mirissa Bay, reachable by a short swim at low tide, popular for cliff jumping into 5m water below.
Coconut Tree Hill (Mirissa)
A small rocky headland east of Mirissa beach planted with tall coconut palms, offering a 270-degree ocean panorama 20m above the water — one of Sri Lanka's most photographed viewpoints.
Mirissa Beach
A 1km crescent bay 150km south of Colombo, Sri Lanka's primary departure point for blue whale watching (November to April), with a calm swimming beach and a growing restaurant scene.
