Sigiriya to Kandy Transfer

From Sigiriya the route returns south via Dambulla and Matale to Kandy. The 78 km drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours and passes the Dambulla Cave Temple, a practical stop on the way back.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

The A9 runs north from Kandy through Matale and Dambulla before a short turn-off east to Sigiriya. Road is well maintained and mostly flat once past Matale; moderate traffic through Dambulla town.

Scenery

The Kandy–Matale stretch passes spice gardens and small vegetable farms on gentle hills. From Matale north the land flattens into dry-zone paddy and scrub. Dambulla's Golden Cave Temple is visible on a prominent rock outcrop as you pass.

Travel Tips

  • Dambulla Cave Temple is a worthwhile stop, allow 1.5 hours and wear covered shoulders and feet.
  • Sigiriya rock is best climbed before 8am to beat the heat and crowds; time your arrival accordingly.
  • The turn-off to Sigiriya is clearly signed from Dambulla, your driver should not miss it but confirm at the junction.
