What the Drive Is Like
Roads
The route follows the A1 out of Colombo to Kurunegala, then heads northeast on the A6 through Dambulla and on to Sigiriya. Roads are well-maintained on the main A-roads; the final stretch to Sigiriya is a two-lane regional road through flat dry-zone terrain.
Scenery
The drive passes through coconut and rubber plantations in the lowlands before entering the dry cultural triangle. Near Dambulla you see the dramatic cave temple rock; approaching Sigiriya the iconic rock fortress rises abruptly from flat scrub forest and ancient irrigation tanks.
★ Travel Tips
- Leave Colombo before 7am to clear city traffic; the drive is 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on congestion.
- Dambulla is directly on the route, easy to stop for the cave temple without a significant detour.
- Sigiriya Rock climbs are best done early morning before heat builds; plan to arrive the afternoon before if you want the first morning slot.
