Jaffna to Kandy Transfer
The full A9 journey from Jaffna, Sri Lanka's northern capital, down to Kandy in the central hills. You leave the flat Jaffna Peninsula, cross the Elephant Pass causeway, traverse the dry Vanni plains through Kilinochchi and Vavuniya, then pass Anuradhapura before the road rises into the green hills around Matale and Kandy.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
The entire route follows the A9 highway, one of Sri Lanka's principal north-south arteries. From Kandy the road climbs briefly through Matale before descending to the dry northern plains. The surface is generally good two-lane tarmac, though town sections in Vavuniya and Anuradhapura slow progress. North of Vavuniya the road is arrow-straight through the Vanni. The crossing at Elephant Pass onto the Jaffna Peninsula is flat causeway.
Scenery
Kandy to Matale is hilly and green. After Dambulla the landscape opens into flat dry-zone plains with ancient irrigation tanks, scattered scrub jungle, and palmyra palms increasing in number toward Kilinochchi and the Jaffna Peninsula. The Elephant Pass causeway offers open lagoon views on both sides.
★ Travel Tips
- Budget the full 8.5 to 9.5 hours without long stops. The road is long and fatigue sets in on the flat Vanni section.
- Anuradhapura is roughly the midpoint and a practical lunch stop.
- Depart early from either end to avoid arriving at your destination after dark.
⊟ Train Alternative
A daily train runs from Colombo to Jaffna via Vavuniya, but no direct rail service connects Kandy and Jaffna.
