Jaffna to Anuradhapura Transfer
From Jaffna the A9 runs south across Elephant Pass and through the Vanni flatlands via Kilinochchi and Vavuniya to Anuradhapura's ancient city. Allow 3.5 to 4 hours on the straight dry-zone highway, with a stop in Vavuniya recommended on longer travel days.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
A9 highway the entire route, running straight and flat through the dry zone north of Anuradhapura. The A9 is a well-maintained two-lane national road; sections north of Vavuniya were rebuilt after 2009 and are in good condition. Traffic is light between towns.
Scenery
Flat dry-zone scrub and palmyra palm groves dominate the entire stretch. Ancient irrigation tanks and seasonal wetlands appear near Vavuniya. Around Kilinochchi and towards Elephant Pass the landscape opens into very flat terrain with occasional lagoon glimpses. The Jaffna peninsula is low-lying with palmyra, tobacco fields, and chilli cultivation.
★ Travel Tips
- The A9 is long and monotonous, a comfort stop in Vavuniya (roughly the halfway point) is practical.
- Jaffna's main sites (Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, the fort, Dambakola Patuna) are spread out; arrange the transfer to drop you centrally.
- Petrol stations are present in Vavuniya and Kilinochchi but can be spaced out, fill up before leaving Anuradhapura.
⊟ Train Alternative
A daily express train runs between Colombo and Jaffna via Anuradhapura, and a stop at Anuradhapura makes rail a viable alternative for this leg, taking approximately 3 hours.
