Galle to Yala Transfer
From Galle the A2 tracks the southern coastline east through Unawatuna, Weligama, and Matara before continuing past Hambantota and turning north to Tissamaharama, the gateway to Yala National Park. The drive combines south-coast beaches with the dry-zone approach to Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife park.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
The A2 coastal highway runs east from Galle through Unawatuna, Koggala, Ahangama, Weligama, and Matara. After Matara the road continues along the south coast through Dickwella and Tangalle before reaching Hambantota. From Hambantota the A2 turns north toward Tissamaharama. The Galle to Matara section passes through several small towns and carries steady traffic. The Matara to Hambantota section is more open coast road.
Scenery
From Galle east the road follows the Indian Ocean coast with views of bays, beaches, and rocky headlands. Weligama Bay has traditional stilt fishermen visible from the road. After Matara the coast becomes more rugged toward Tangalle. Hambantota has a large modern port. Approaching Tissamaharama the terrain becomes dry scrub, and the ancient Tissamaharama tank is visible before the park.
★ Travel Tips
- Leave Galle early in the morning to reach Yala in time for an afternoon safari entry.
- Weligama is a good coastal stop for a short break. The stilt fishermen are most active in the morning.
- Tissamaharama is the practical base for Yala. Accommodation is plentiful and jeep operators are available there.
⊟ Train Alternative
A train runs from Colombo through Galle to Matara, but no rail service continues from Matara toward Yala.
