From Galle the A2 heads east along the coast to Matara, then turns inland through Embilipitiya and climbs to Wellawaya before the final ascent into Ella. Allow 3 to 3.5 hours, with the highland climb best tackled in the cooler morning.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
Descending from Ella via the A4 to Wellawaya, then westward through Embilipitiya on flatter inland roads before reaching the coast near Matara and the final stretch on the A2 to Galle. Roads are good quality from Wellawaya onwards; the Ella descent is winding but well-surfaced.
Scenery
The route drops quickly from Ella's green highlands through dry-zone scrub and paddy in the southern lowlands. After Embilipitiya the land is flat with coconut and rubber estates. From Matara the A2 runs along the coast to Galle, passing the old Dutch lighthouse at Dondra Head (Sri Lanka's southernmost point) and fishing beaches.
