South coast beaches and fishing harbours from Galle to MataraTangalle, a quieter southern bay townUdawalawe National Park, the best place in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants

Galle to Udawalawe Transfer

From Galle the A2 follows the south coast east through Hikkaduwa, Matara, and Tangalle before turning inland at Embilipitiya. The final section crosses dry-zone farmland to reach Udawalawe National Park, known for its large resident elephant population around the reservoir.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

From Galle the A2 heads east along the south coast through Hikkaduwa, Ambalangoda, and Matara. After Matara the road continues east to Tangalle. From Tangalle the route turns inland on the A18 toward Embilipitiya, then follows local roads south to Udawalawe. The coastal A2 section is well maintained. The Tangalle to Embilipitiya inland section is a decent road with moderate traffic. The final approach to Udawalawe is through flat dry-zone terrain.

Scenery

The Galle to Matara section follows the south coast with ocean views, fishing harbours, and coconut-lined roads. After Matara the coast continues to Tangalle with calmer bays. Inland from Tangalle the scenery shifts to paddy fields and low jungle. Near Embilipitiya and Udawalawe the reservoir appears on the horizon with dry-zone scrub ahead.

Travel Tips

  • Tangalle makes a good break on this journey. The beaches there are calmer than the Unawatuna or Mirissa stretch.
  • Book a Udawalawe jeep safari in advance. Morning or evening drives are best for elephant sightings at the reservoir edge.
  • The Embilipitiya junction can be confusing. Ask locally or use GPS for the road to Udawalawe from that point.

Train Alternative

No useful train connection between Galle and Udawalawe. The Matara rail line does not extend to Embilipitiya or Udawalawe.
