Bandaranaike Airport (BIA) to Kosgoda Transfer
From BIA, the E03 expressway feeds into Colombo, then the E01 Southern Expressway carries you down the southwest coast before you exit to join the A2 at Aluthgama and continue south to Kosgoda, a quiet coastal village known for its turtle hatchery.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
From BIA the E03 Katunayake Expressway (25.8 km) leads to the Peliyagoda interchange at Colombo. The recommended onwards route uses the E01 Southern Expressway from Kottawa, exiting near Aluthgama, then joining the A2 south to Balapitiya and Kosgoda. The alternative A2 coastal road from Colombo is slower through town traffic. The E03 and E01 are modern toll roads in good condition. The final A2 stretch from Aluthgama to Kosgoda is straightforward.
Scenery
The E03 from the airport is open expressway with limited views. After Colombo the E01 runs inland until the Aluthgama exit. On the A2 coastal road, the first proper beach scenery appears around Kalutara. From Aluthgama south through Balapitiya to Kosgoda the road runs close to the coast with coconut groves and fishing boats.
★ Travel Tips
- Use the E01 Southern Expressway after Colombo to skip coastal town congestion on the A2. Exit at Welipanna and join the A2 near Aluthgama.
- Kosgoda is known for its sea turtle hatchery, open to visitors during the day.
- Colombo city traffic is the main delay. Travelling before 7am or after 9pm avoids the worst congestion.
⊟ Train Alternative
A train runs from Colombo Fort south along the coast and stops near Kosgoda, though it does not serve the airport.
