Month guide
Sri Lanka in March
The crossover month: still prime in the west, quietly workable in the east, and hotter than the earlier peak months inland.
Is March a good time to visit?
Yes, and it is the sleeper pick: still dry on the classic route, noticeably quieter than January-February, and unusually flexible because the east coast has already dried out. Trincomalee (72mm) and Batticaloa (70mm) are both close to or below Colombo's (103mm) March rainfall, so both coasts are genuinely in play, though the east coast's tourist infrastructure and season framing are built around the May-to-September stretch, not March specifically. The one firm caution is heat: Anuradhapura's 35°C average high is its annual peak, so plan the Sigiriya climb for early morning.
The verdict
The most flexible month on the calendar, with one heat warning.
March breaks the simple west-is-dry rule: Trincomalee (72mm) and Batticaloa (70mm) are now both close to or below Colombo (103mm) and Galle (90mm), a genuine crossover from December-February's pattern. Both coasts are workable this month, with neither ruling out the other. Crowds thin as the European winter-escape season winds down, and the hills stay excellent. The real caveat is heat: Anuradhapura pushes 35°C, its annual peak, so the big Cultural Triangle climbs are scheduled for dawn and middays stay gentle.
- Best regions
- Both coasts workable (a March exclusive), hills, Cultural Triangle
- Heat watch
- Anuradhapura/Sigiriya up to ~35°C
- Sea for swimming
- West, south, and now the east too
- Crowds
- Tapering; the calmest of the peak months, German Easter demand builds from the last week
- Inter-monsoon
- Short afternoon storms possible, not sustained monsoon rain
Region by region
The weather in March, honestly
March is where the coast preference flips: the east coast (Trincomalee 72mm, Batticaloa 70mm) is now close to or below the west's rainfall (Colombo 103mm, Galle 90mm), a genuine crossover, even though the December-to-February advice to head west keeps getting repeated. Kandy's rainfall and temperature (71mm, 18-30°C) come from a secondary source rather than an official climate normal, so treat them as approximate. Hill-country figures above are Nuwara Eliya's; Ella sits lower and tends to run warmer and drier. Figures are 1991 to 2020 climate averages.
| Region | Temperatures | Rainfall | Sea | Call it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) | 25-32°C | Trincomalee ~72mm/4.0 rain days; Batticaloa ~70mm/4.7 rain days | Calming; now genuinely swimmable, the crossover from the December-February pattern | Now the drier coast here |
| Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa) | 24-35°C | Anuradhapura ~62mm/5.0 rain days, its annual heat peak (34.8°C) | n/a | Dry but properly hot |
| Kandy | 18-30°C | ~71mm/8 rain days | n/a | Good, warm middays |
| Hill country (Nuwara Eliya, Ella) | 11-22°C | Nuwara Eliya ~72mm/7.1 rain days | n/a | Excellent |
| South-east (Tangalle, Yala) | 24-32°C | Hambantota ~47mm/4.0 rain days | Calm; essentially tied with February as the driest coastal region | Prime |
| South-west coast (Bentota, Galle, Mirissa) | 25-32°C | Galle ~90mm/6.9 rain days | Still good, warming | Still good, warming |
| Colombo & Negombo | 25-32°C | ~103mm/7.7 rain days | Still good, warming | Still good, warming |
| North (Jaffna) | 23-33°C | ~43mm/3.9 rain days | Calm | Dry |

Route planning
How a trip works in March
March is the one enrichment month where a route genuinely has two workable coast options, with neither ruled out by rain. The classic shape, Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the tea country, south coast, still holds up well. A route that adds a short Trincomalee stop alongside the south coast, or swaps it in, is a fair trade this month specifically, something December, January and February do not support. Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, and several German states' Osterferien begin around 22 March, so the very last week of the month starts to carry fresh European demand on top of the usual late-peak-season crowd.
Pack for real heat inland: Anuradhapura's 35°C average high is its annual peak, so schedule Sigiriya and Anuradhapura for early morning and keep middays to shade and pool time. Standard warm-weather kit covers the rest of the route.

Itineraries that suit March
Names December to March directly, and March is the last month of that window before the hill country turns wetter.
Also names December to March; March sits inside the Mirissa whale-watching window that shapes its south-coast finish.
Names December to March for the best balance of dry hill-country weather, the whale-watching window and manageable heat across the full loop.
What the month is good for
In season in March
Genuinely in season
- Both coasts swimmable: a flexibility no other peak month here offers
- Whale watching at Mirissa: February-March are the most consistent months
- Sinharaja rainforest, a UNESCO-listed lowland rainforest reserve: still in its optimal window
- Nuwara Eliya and the tea country at their driest
- Early east-coast beach time before that coast's May-to-September high season begins
Skip or reconsider this month
- Midday climbs at Sigiriya or Anuradhapura: 34.8-35°C says do them at dawn
- Kalpitiya kites: the winter season winds down through March
- Arugam Bay surf: swell builds from May, not yet
- Minneriya and Kaudulla elephant gathering: closed, its window sits within roughly May to October
The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your March travel date; by March the odds are better than earlier in the season, but check current status before counting on it. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.
Dates that shape the month
Festivals and holidays
- Maha Shivaratri
- Saturday 6 March 2027, an estimate pending official confirmation. Hindu temples, notably Koneswaram in Trincomalee, at their most atmospheric.
- Madin Full Moon Poya
- Sunday 21 March 2027, an estimate pending official confirmation. Island-wide poya rules apply.
Poya-day rules apply island-wide: no alcohol sales, busy temples. Worth building into the itinerary.
Crowds and money
The peak season's quiet exit, with a late-month uptick
March keeps peak-season weather while the crowds and prices taper through most of the month: the European winter-escape wave heads home, hotels loosen, and the famous sights breathe again. That eases toward the very end of March: Easter Sunday falls on 28 March 2027, and several German states' Osterferien begin around 22 March, so the last week of the month is busier than the quiet close the rest of March offers.
Quick answers
March questions
Is March a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, and it is the sleeper pick: still dry on the classic route, noticeably quieter than January-February, and uniquely flexible because the east coast has already dried out. Trincomalee (72mm) is now close to Colombo's March rainfall (103mm), so both coasts are genuinely in play.
How hot is Sri Lanka in March?
Hotter than the earlier peak months, especially inland: Anuradhapura hits a 34.8°C average high against roughly 30°C in December. Climb Sigiriya at 7am and plan Cultural Triangle time around midday shade. The coasts stay a manageable 31-32°C and the hills a pleasant 11-22°C.
Which coast should I pick in March?
Either coast works well, which is unusual: the west and south still work (90-103mm), while the east has crossed into a drier pattern (70-72mm). No monsoon starts in March; it is the first inter-monsoon, bringing short afternoon thunderstorms, not sustained rain. The southwest monsoon proper arrives around May.
Does Easter affect March travel demand?
From the very end of the month, yes. Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, and several German states' Osterferien begin around 22 March, so the last week of March carries the start of fresh German Easter-holiday demand on top of the usual late-season crowd.
Is the 'east coast now drier' claim accurate?
Directionally yes, but an earlier figure on this page understated it. Trincomalee's March rainfall is roughly 72mm and Batticaloa's roughly 70mm, both close to or below Colombo's 103mm and Galle's 90mm, a smaller margin than a previous ~55mm estimate implied.
Does the Arugam Bay Surf and East Coast Escape package run in March?
No. It runs May to October, so March falls outside it. The east coast is workable weather-wise in March, but this specific surf-focused package is not built around that month.
Weather figures are typical ranges; festival dates are confirmed for 2026-27 where listed. Updated September 2026.
