Month guide
Sri Lanka in February
The driest month on every line of the table below. If dates are flexible, this is the one to take.
Is February a good time to visit?
Yes, and by the numbers it is the single best month to have flexible dates. February is the driest month across every region tracked here, whale watching off Mirissa and kitesurfing at Kalpitiya are both at full strength, and Horton Plains is at its clearest for the World's End viewpoint. The east coast is improving fast but is not yet the plan: Batticaloa still gets roughly 149mm for the month. European half-term school holidays add some crowding, spread unevenly across several weeks, unlike December's single Christmas surge date.
The verdict
The island's driest month, and its easiest to plan.
Every region on the table hits its lowest or near-lowest rainfall in February: Colombo (77mm), Galle (71mm), Hambantota (47mm, the driest figure on this page's table), Anuradhapura (60mm) and Nuwara Eliya (73mm) are all at or near their annual low. The Christmas surge has faded to a normal high-season crowd, and the marquee experiences, whales off Mirissa, kites at Kalpitiya, Horton Plains under clear sky, are all at full strength. Even the east coast is drying fast: Batticaloa's 149mm is well down on December's 469mm, though its real season is still a month or two out.

Region by region
The weather in February, honestly
February is the one month where every region on the table leans dry at the same time. Kandy's figures (74mm, 18-28°C) come from a secondary source rather than an official climate normal, so treat them as approximate. Hill-country figures above are Nuwara Eliya's; Ella sits lower and tends to run warmer and drier. Figures are 1991 to 2020 climate averages.
| Region | Temperatures | Rainfall | Sea | Call it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| East coast (Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay) | 24-30°C | Trincomalee ~96mm/4.7 rain days; Batticaloa ~149mm/6.6 rain days | Improving fast, still the wettest coast on the table | Improving, not yet prime |
| Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa) | 22-32°C | Anuradhapura ~60mm/4.3 rain days | n/a | Prime |
| Kandy | 18-28°C | ~74mm/5 rain days | n/a | Very good |
| Hill country (Nuwara Eliya, Ella) | 10-21°C, cold nights | Nuwara Eliya ~73mm/6.7 rain days | n/a | Its best month |
| South-east (Tangalle, Yala) | 24-32°C | Hambantota ~47mm/4.0 rain days, the driest figure on this page's table | Calm, the driest coastal region | Prime |
| South-west coast (Bentota, Galle, Mirissa) | 24-31°C | Galle ~71mm/5.8 rain days | Calm and settled; whale and surf seasons in full swing | Prime |
| Colombo & Negombo | 24-32°C | ~77mm/5.1 rain days | Calm and settled | Driest of the year here |
| North (Jaffna) | 22-31°C | ~26mm/2.3 rain days | Calm | Very dry |

Route planning
How a trip works in February
February is the month where a route needs the least compromise: the classic circuit through the Cultural Triangle, Kandy and the tea country to the south coast runs at full strength, and even a short east-coast add-on works better here than in December or January, since Batticaloa's rainfall has dropped to roughly a third of its December figure. There is little to route around this month beyond the usual driver-guide logistics.
Pack for warm, dry coasts and Cultural Triangle heat, and proper layers for Nuwara Eliya's cold nights, where the average low sits around 10°C. This is the hill country's driest month; its warmest falls later in the year.

Itineraries that suit February
Names December to March directly for the driest hill-country weather and the best safari conditions.
Also names December to March, with February inside the Mirissa whale-watching window its south-coast finish is built around.
Names December to March as driest for the hill-country and beach legs.
What the month is good for
In season in February
Genuinely in season
- Whale watching at Mirissa: February-March are the most consistent sighting months
- Kalpitiya kitesurfing: roughly 25 windy days in the month
- Horton Plains and World's End, a highland plateau and viewpoint in the hill country: at their clearest
- Sinharaja rainforest, a UNESCO-listed lowland rainforest reserve: in its optimal window
- South-west surf season still fully on
Skip or reconsider this month
- Arugam Bay surf: still out of season, its window is May to October
- East-coast beach holidays as the plan: close, but March onwards is the more reliable call
- Minneriya and Kaudulla elephant gathering: closed, its window sits within roughly May to October
The Kandy-Ella train, this month
As of our September 2026 check, the Kandy-Ella train is not running end-to-end from Kandy: only the Nanu Oya-Ella-Badulla section operates, following Cyclone Ditwah damage. The Kandy-Nanu Oya stretch is expected to reopen around the end of 2026 or early 2027, which may or may not have happened by your February travel date; check current status before counting on it, especially if the famous ride is a centrepiece of your plans. We arrange the road-to-Nanu-Oya workaround either way.
Dates that shape the month
Festivals and holidays
- Independence Day
- Thursday 4 February 2027. National ceremonies and parades, biggest in Colombo.
- Navam Full Moon Poya
- Saturday 20 February 2027, an estimate pending official confirmation. Island-wide poya rules apply.
- Navam Maha Perahera, Gangaramaya
- Colombo's grand procession, held annually around the Navam Poya; exact 2027 dates not yet published by the temple at our last check.
The Navam Perahera is worth planning around if you are in Colombo; ask us and we confirm the dates as the temple announces them.
Crowds and money
High season at a steady pace
February carries a normal high-season crowd, with none of December's single sharp surge date. Only some German states take a February break at all: Bayern runs a short window (8-12 February 2027), Berlin and Brandenburg run 1-6 February, and Baden-Württemberg and NRW have none listed. France's vacances d'hiver are staggered by zone across most of the month (roughly 6 February to 8 March combined), and the Netherlands' voorjaarsvakantie is staggered by region too. Australia has no February school holiday, since Victoria's summer break ends 26 January. The effect is real but spread thin: sights are busy at the famous hours, and hotels want booking a few weeks ahead.
Quick answers
February questions
Is February the best month to visit Sri Lanka?
By the numbers, yes: it is the driest month across every region of the island, from Colombo (77mm) to the hill country (73mm) to the Cultural Triangle (60mm). Whale watching is at its most consistent, Kalpitiya's kite winds are at their best, and the Christmas-price surge has faded to a normal high-season crowd.
What festivals happen in February?
Independence Day on Thursday 4 February 2027 brings parades and ceremonies, especially in Colombo. Navam Full Moon Poya falls on Saturday 20 February 2027 (an estimate pending official confirmation) with the usual island-wide poya rules, and Colombo's Gangaramaya temple holds its grand Navam Perahera procession around that Poya; the temple had not published exact 2027 dates at our last check.
Is February good for the hill country?
It is arguably the hill country's best month: Nuwara Eliya's driest weather (around 73mm) with cool 10-21°C days, Horton Plains at its clearest for the World's End view, and the tea country photogenic under blue sky. Pack layers; nights at 1,900m are genuinely cold.
Which region is driest in February?
The south-east coast around Tangalle, at roughly 47mm for the month, the lowest monthly rainfall figure of any region on this page.
Do European half-terms bring extra crowds in February?
Yes, but unevenly. Only some German states take a February break at all: Bavaria's is a short 8-12 February window, while France's and the Netherlands' breaks are staggered by zone or region across most of the month, so the crowd effect spreads across several weeks, unlike December's single-date Christmas overlap.
Is February good for the east coast yet?
Getting there but not fully. Batticaloa's roughly 149mm is still more than double the south-west coast's February rainfall, so the east coast is improving but is not yet the plan; March onwards is the more reliable call.
Weather figures are typical ranges; festival dates are confirmed for 2026-27 where listed. Updated September 2026.
