Weligama to Kandy Transfer

From Weligama, head west along the south coast then climb inland through the hill country to Kandy. Allow 4.5 to 5 hours; the mountain roads are narrow in places and best tackled in daylight.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

The most direct inland route runs from Kandy south on the A5 through Gampola, then descends sharply to the southern coast, joining the A2 coast road to Weligama. The hill roads have tight bends and occasional slow trucks; the coastal A2 is straighter but busy near Matara.

Scenery

The descent from Kandy crosses tea-covered hillsides in the Gampola and Hatton areas, then drops through mixed jungle and rubber to the coast. The A2 along the southern shore passes beaches, fishing harbours, and paddy flats as you approach Weligama Bay.

Travel Tips

  • Start before 8 am from Kandy to avoid congestion through Peradeniya and Gampola.
  • The mountain section can be misty in the morning; drive cautiously on blind bends.
  • Weligama is a popular surf town; accommodation books out quickly in December to April high season.
