Trincomalee to Kandy Transfer

Leaving Trincomalee on the east coast, the A6 crosses dry-zone plains through Kantale and Habarana before reaching the junction at Dambulla. The road then turns southwest on the A9, climbing through Matale into the central hills to arrive at Kandy.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

From Kandy the A9 heads north through Matale, climbing briefly then descending to the dry zone at Dambulla (about 63 km). At Dambulla the A6 branches northeast toward Trincomalee. The A6 passes through Habarana and Kantale before reaching Trincomalee. The road is in reasonable condition throughout. The Kandy to Dambulla section has moderate traffic and some winding stretches near Matale.

Scenery

From Kandy to Matale the road runs through hilly country with paddy and market gardens. After Matale the terrain opens and flattens approaching Dambulla, with rocky outcrops visible on the landscape. The Dambulla to Habarana section passes through the Cultural Triangle with occasional ancient tanks. East of Habarana the dry-zone plains extend toward the east coast at Trincomalee.

Travel Tips

  • Stop at Dambulla Cave Temples. They are right on the route and take about 90 minutes to visit.
  • From Habarana, Minneriya National Park is 15 km east and worth a detour for the elephant gathering from July to October.
  • Trincomalee Bay beaches at Nilaveli and Uppuveli are 15 to 20 km north of town centre.

Train Alternative

No direct train connects Kandy and Trincomalee. A train runs from Colombo via Habarana to Trincomalee, but not from Kandy.
