The western lowlands around Negombo and Kurunegala are coconut and paddy country. The terrain dries as you enter the cultural triangle near Dambulla. Approaching Sigiriya the flat scrubland is broken by ancient irrigation tanks, and the 180-metre rock fortress appears suddenly on the horizon.
