Mirissa to Hikkaduwa Transfer
From Mirissa the A2 heads west through Weligama and Ahangama, then past Galle Fort and north through Unawatuna to Hikkaduwa. The route stays on the southwest coast throughout and can be done comfortably in under 1.5 hours.
What the Drive Is Like
Roads
The A2 coastal highway runs south from Hikkaduwa through Galle, then east along the south coast through Unawatuna, Koggala, Ahangama, and Weligama. Mirissa is located just past Weligama on the A2. The road is the main south-coast highway and carries steady tourist and local traffic. The Galle town section slows progress. Overall the surface is good and the route is straightforward.
Scenery
The entire drive follows the Indian Ocean coast. Hikkaduwa to Galle passes surf beaches and the coral reef area. After Galle the road continues east with sea views through Unawatuna bay, Koggala lagoon, and the long sweep of Ahangama coast. Weligama Bay has traditional stilt fishermen standing on poles in the shallows. Mirissa is a small curved bay beach.
★ Travel Tips
- Stop at Galle Fort for an hour if time allows. The Dutch ramparts and town inside are worth the short detour.
- Weligama stilt fishermen are most photogenic in morning light, around 7 to 9am.
- Mirissa is small and parking near the beach can be limited. Drop off luggage at accommodation first before exploring.
⊟ Train Alternative
A train runs from Colombo south through Hikkaduwa toward Matara, stopping at several stations along this coastal stretch.
