Roads

The A1 from Kandy descends through Kegalle and the Kadugannawa Pass to Colombo, then the A3 north from Colombo to Negombo. The A1 is a well-used national highway; Colombo city adds significant congestion, particularly during peak hours.

The descent from Kandy on the A1 passes rubber plantations and the Kadugannawa escarpment with views over the lower plains. The route flattens through Kegalle and passes near Pinnawala. North of Colombo, the A3 runs through flat coastal lowlands to the Negombo lagoon.
