Kandy to Galle Transfer

From Kandy, descend the Kadugannawa Pass and head south on the A1 through Kegalle before joining the expressway to Galle. Allow 4 to 5 hours; morning departures from Kandy typically have lighter traffic through Colombo.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

The Southern Expressway (E01) runs from Galle to the Colombo outskirts quickly, then the A1 continues north-east through Kegalle and up the Kadugannawa Pass to Kandy. Total road quality is good; the Kadugannawa ascent has tight bends and slow trucks.

Scenery

The expressway section is fast and mostly inland with coconut groves and paddy. North of Colombo the A1 passes Pinnawala area near Kegalle, then climbs through forested hills to the Kadugannawa Pass with views over the valley below. Bible Rock is visible on the ascent.

Travel Tips

  • Use the E01 Southern Expressway from Galle to save 45–60 minutes compared to the old coastal A2.
  • The Kadugannawa hill section slows to 30–40 km/h behind trucks; factor this into your arrival time for Kandy.
  • Galle Fort is worth an early-morning walk before departure if you have flexibility.
