Ella to Kandy Transfer

From Ella the road climbs through the tea-covered hills of Bandarawela, Haputale, and Nuwara Eliya before descending via Hatton and Gampola to Kandy. The entire route passes through Sri Lanka's central highland tea country with mountain views throughout.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

From Ella the road climbs north through Bandarawela and Haputale into the central highlands. Continuing through Welimada and up to Nuwara Eliya the roads are winding and narrow with steep gradients. From Nuwara Eliya the A5 descends via Nanu Oya and Hatton toward Gampola, then connects to Kandy. The highland section between Haputale and Nuwara Eliya is the most demanding, with tight bends and possible mist. Road surfaces are reasonable but progress is slow.

Scenery

Tea estates line almost the entire route from Ella through to Hatton. Bandarawela and Haputale sit on ridges with long views south toward the lowlands. Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by high-altitude tea and vegetable country. The descent from Nuwara Eliya to Hatton passes through more tea country with Ramboda Falls visible in the wetter months. Approaching Kandy the hills become greener and more forested.

Travel Tips

  • The winding roads add significant time. Budget 3.5 to 4 hours even without stops.
  • Nuwara Eliya is a natural midpoint for a break. The town centre has good food options.
  • The Kandy to Ella train through these highlands is a well-regarded rail journey and worth considering if your schedule allows.

Train Alternative

The Kandy to Ella train is one of the most celebrated rail journeys in Asia, passing through Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) and continuing through the central highlands to Ella.
