Colombo to Bandaranaike Airport (BIA) Transfer

From central Colombo, the E03 Katunayake Expressway provides a direct 25.8 km link to Bandaranaike International Airport. Allow at least 60 minutes from the city centre during peak hours, or 45 minutes at off-peak times.

What the Drive Is Like

Roads

The primary route is the E03 Colombo-Katunayake Expressway (25.8 km), a dual-carriageway toll road that runs from the airport through Seeduwa and Ja-Ela to the Peliyagoda interchange at the edge of Colombo. The alternative A3 old Negombo Road is slower, running through suburban towns. Traffic on the expressway is generally free-flowing. The Peliyagoda to city-centre section can be slow during peak hours.

Scenery

The E03 is elevated in sections with views over the coastal lowlands and the Kelani River mouth. The surroundings are largely suburban and industrial from Katunayake to Peliyagoda. Entering Colombo from Peliyagoda the road passes through a dense urban area toward Fort and the commercial centre.

Travel Tips

  • The E03 toll is approximately LKR 150 to 200 one way and is worth paying to avoid the congested A3 old road.
  • Journey time is 40 to 55 minutes outside peak hours but can reach 90 minutes during morning (7 to 9am) or evening (4 to 7pm) rush periods.
  • If heading to the Colombo Fort area, confirm your exact destination address with your driver beforehand, as one-way systems can complicate the final few kilometres.

Train Alternative

No direct train runs from BIA to Colombo. The nearest rail connection requires a bus or tuk-tuk to Katunayake or Negombo stations with a change at Colombo Fort.
