What the Drive Is Like
Roads
The route uses the A9 north from Anuradhapura through Medawachchiya, then continues straight to Vavuniya. North of Vavuniya the road passes the former checkpoint at Omanthai and enters the Vanni, running flat and straight through Mankulam and Kilinochchi. After Paranthan it crosses the Elephant Pass causeway onto the Jaffna Peninsula. Jaffna Airport (Palaly) lies approximately 16 km north of Jaffna city. Road surface is generally good throughout.
Scenery
Dry-zone landscape from start to finish. Anuradhapura gives way to flat scrub forest and open farmland north of Medawachchiya. Palmyra palms increase in number north of Vavuniya. The Elephant Pass crossing has open lagoon on both sides. The Jaffna Peninsula is low-lying with palmyra-lined lanes.
★ Travel Tips
- Vavuniya is the main fuel and food stop on this route. Fill up there as options are limited further north.
- Jaffna Airport (Palaly) is north of Jaffna city centre, so factor in extra time if combining with a city visit.
- Depart Anuradhapura by mid-morning to allow comfortable airport arrival with buffer time.
